Deputy involved Shooting in Commerce Leaves One Person Dead

COMMERCE (CNS) - A confrontation and shooting involving sheriff's deputies in Commerce today left one suspect dead, another suspect wounded and a deputy hospitalized for treatment of facial injuries, authorities said.  

Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's East Los Angeles Station responded at approximately 4 a.m. to the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard after receiving a shots fired call, said Deputy Miguel Meza of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.  

Meza said a deputy reportedly saw two suspects attempting to start a fire at a nearby gas station, a confrontation ensued and a shooting between the deputy and the suspects occurred.  

According to a preliminary report from the sheriff's department, one suspect was shot and wounded and was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Another suspect died, but the cause of that person's death was unknown, the sheriff's department reported.  

A deputy suffered facial injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
