The death toll in Haiti's 7.2-magnitude earthquake over the weekend has climbed to over 1,400, officials say.
- That number is only expected to rise in the aftermath of the quake, which struck Saturday about 78 miles west of Port-au-Prince. It wiped out entire towns and triggered massive mudslides as residents continued dealing with aftershocks throughout the weekend, according to the Pan American Health Organization.
- The quake also leveled a number of Haiti's hospitals, leaving a number of the 2,800 people who were injured with nowhere to go, says surgeon Dr. Edward Destine. Making matters worse is the hospitals that survived are suffering from shortages of antibiotics and medical equipment, he adds. "I would like to operate on 10 people today, but I just don’t have the supplies," Destine says.
