A second player for the San Diego Padres has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
Infielder Jorge Mateo tested positive for the coronavirus during mandatory intake screenings on Wednesday, the team has announced. Mateo's diagnosis comes a week after one of his teammates, Tommy Pham, also tested positive.
Both Mateo, who's 25, and Phram, 32, are now in isolation, according to the team.
Since the league began testing for the coronavirus, 66 people have tested positive. Of them, 58 are players, and eight are team staff members. And some players are now opting out of the upcoming season in hopes of avoiding the virus all together...
Just last Saturday, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher David Price announced he would not being playing in the 2020 MLB season.
"After considerable thought and discussion with my family and the Dodgers, I have decided it is in the best interest of my health and my family's health to not play this season," the 34-year-old wrote on Twitter. "I will miss my teammates and will be cheering for them throughout the season and on to a World Series victory. I'm sorry I won't be playing for you this year, but look forward to representing you next year."
The 2020 MLB season is set to begin later this month and last through September.
