The man suspected of murdering two people in Newport Beach was arrested Thursday.
Jamon Rayon Buggs, 44, was reportedly already in police custody on suspicion of two attempted residential burglaries in Irvine.
Wendi Miller, 48, and Darren Partch, 38, were found dead by Partch's roommate in an apartment on East 15th Street Sunday night.
According to friends of the pair, Miller and Partch were last seen near the Sandpiper Bar in Laguna Beach around 1:45 a.m. Saturday. Miller planned to give Partch a ride home since they lived near each other but when she never came home her family reported her missing.
According to Irvine police, the first attempted burglary occurred at 11:35 p.m. Saturday but the incident was interrupted by the resident and Buggs was scared off. The suspect, who we now know is Buggs, fired a single round from a gun, and a bullet was found lodged outside the home.
The second attempted burglary occurred about 5 a.m. Sunday, but the homeowner did not report it till the afternoon after reviewing surveillance video showing the suspect trying but failing to pry the front door open.
Buggs was arrested Monday after police investigating the two incident spotted a suspicious vehicle around 12:15 a.m Monday. Officers tried to stop the vehicle and a short pursuit ensued, ending after Buggs crashed the vehicle and ran into a backyard. Buggs then allegedly broke into an unoccupied home and was there for hours before he ran out about 4 a.m., police said. He was eventually taken into custody, KTLA reports.
For that particular incident, Buggs was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted burglary, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, possession of a firearm by a felon, and hit-and-run, police said.
Buggs is being held on $1,000,000 bail pending double murder charges.
Miller, of Costa Mesa, ran a nonprofit, Wings For Justice, that worked to help children within the family court system. Partch was a hockey player turned account executive.
