Ten People, Including Four Children, Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash

HAWTHORNE (CNS) - Ten people, including four children, were injured today in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred in the Hawthorne area as Manhattan Beach police were in pursuit of a residential burglary suspect, authorities said.

Paramedics were sent to Prairie and Marine avenues about 10:55 a.m., said county fire Inspector Randall Wright, and took three adults and four children to various hospitals with injuries of unknown severity. Three other adults were treated at the scene and released, the fire department reported. Two people were freed by firefighters after being trapped in the wreckage.

According to Manhattan Beach police, a witness reported a residential burglary in progress in the area of the 1100 block of 18th Street about 10:45 a.m.

``The witness provided a description of the suspect vehicle,'' according to a police statement. ``An officer on patrol in the area observed the vehicle traveling eastbound on Marine. Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle near the Hilton Garden Inn in Redondo Beach. The suspect driver of the vehicle continued eastbound on Marine (Avenue).''

Officers were still in pursuit of the vehicle when the collision occurred, according to Manhattan Beach police, who said the driver was taken into custody, and the other two suspects were being sought.
