Southern California is about to be hit with a large heat wave this weekend. Doctors are expecting many people to land in the hospital for heat related illnesses.

Young children and the elderly are more vulnerable in extreme heat. Even teens and young adults who play sports during the summertime can be affected by the heat. It is very important for groups of people regardless of age to stay cool and drink lots of water. Most people don't realize that they have a heat related illness and are dehydrated.

Some of the symptoms of heat related illnesses are nausea, vomiting, and some may become unresponsive. Because temperatures will be high, here are some tips to stay cool:

  • Limit your time outside - keep outdoor activities to the morning.
  • Take water breaks and drink plenty of water.
  • Wear a cool cloth around your neck and wrists.
