NASA Beams Hologram Of Doctor To International Space Station

Doctor's appointments can be tough to keep when you're busy orbiting the Earth aboard the International Space Station. Fortunately, NASA has come up with the next best thing - a holographic house call.

  • This week, NASA beamed flight surgeon Josef Schmid to the ISS via technology they call 'holoportation' - putting Schmid aboard the station in the form of a 3-D hologram that can consult with astronauts in real time.
  • Astronauts wear a special 'augmented reality' headset to see and interact with Schmid and his medical team.
  • Schmid said holoportation is a "completely new manner of human communication across vast distances".
  • Does this mean holograms will soon replace FaceTime?
