The first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in California.

The White House announced on Wednesday that a person in CA has become the first person in the United States to have an identified case of the Omicron variant.

A few cases have been identified in about two dozen other nations around the globe, but today's announcement from the White House is the first in the United States.

“We knew that it was just a matter of time before the first case of omicron would be detected in the United States,”

said Dr. Anthony Fauci when speaking to reporters at the White House.

According to Fauci the person that has the omicron variant was a traveler who recently returned from South Africa on November 22nd and later tested positive on November 29th. Fauci also added that the person was vaccinated, but had not received a booster shot. The person has not been identified, nor the location of the person. They are said to be experiencing "mild symptoms".

There are currently more questions than answers about the omicron variant.
