SOUTH EL MONTE (CNS) - A black cow who ran loose this morning under the Pomona (60) Freeway in South El Monte has been caught.
County animal control officers secured the animal at about 6 a.m., Lt. J. Meza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Temple station told City News Service.
Meza referred questions about the location of the escape and recovery and the cow's status to animal control officials, who were not immediately available.
Authorities were called at 4:07 a.m. to Durfee Avenue and Peck Road, said Officer Patrick Kimball of the California Highway Patrol. Kimball said it was unknown how the cow got loose, or where the animal came from. As the cow was under the freeway, he or she did not impact traffic, Kimball said.
No further details were immediately available.
It was the second time in about a week that one or more cows have gotten free and made news.
On June 22, 40 bovines escaped a slaughterhouse in Pico Rivera when an employee mistakenly left a door open. The animals stampeded through residential streets, causing some property damage.
One was killed by a sheriff's deputy after charging at a family, and one was recovered two days later in South El Monte, about five miles away, and donated to a local sanctuary. The other 38 cows were recovered and returned to the slaughterhouse, where they were killed.
