Big (Really, Really Big) Iceberg Breaks Free In Antarctica

Scientists say a giant iceberg broke off the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica last week.

  • The chunk is 490 square miles -- bigger than New York City.
  • Scientists say they had been expecting the iceberg to break away because of large cracks forming over the past several years.
  • Now, they just wait and see where it might end up.
"Over coming weeks or months, the iceberg may move away, or it could run aground and remain close to Brunt Ice Shelf."
  • What's the first thing that pops into your head when you hear "giant iceberg"?
