One Dead, One Injured in Plane Crash in San Pedro Area

SAN PEDRO (CNS) - A single-engine airplane crashed today in a cargo container yard at the Port of Los Angeles, killing the pilot and seriously injuring a man on the ground.

The crash occurred about noon in the 2500 block of South Navy Way, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. The plane struck a tractor-trailer on its way down.

"One patient is sadly beyond medical help and determined deceased on scene -- (the) occupant of (the) plane," said Margaret Stewart of the LAFD.

Information on the identity of the fatally injured pilot, described only as a male, was not immediately available.

"This incident is in an isolated area of the Port of L.A. and port operations have not been impacted," Stewart said. "The patient transported (to a hospital) from the semi-tractor trailer is an approximately 30 (-year- old) male patient."

"The deceased patient from the airplane is male, age unknown," Stewart said. "Bystanders pulled the patient from the wreckage and were directed in providing CPR via the LAFD 9-1-1 Dispatcher until LAFD firefighters arrived and assumed medical care."

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
