COSTA MESA (CNS) - The Orange County District Attorney's Office is investigating the police shooting of a knife-wielding man in Costa Mesa over the weekend.
Police were called about 5:15 a.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Baker Street regarding a disturbance with the suspect, said Roxi Fyad, spokeswoman for the Costa Mesa Police Department.
When officers arrived they attempted to talk to the suspect, but he walked away and officers noticed he was holding a knife, Fyad said. When the officers attempted to get him to halt and drop the weapon, he kept walking toward Enterprise Street, ignoring the orders, Fyad said.
The suspect then turned toward the officers and charged at them with the knife, prompting the shooting, Fyad said.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital to be treated for wounds that were not considered life-threatening.
The suspect is 28 years old and his identity is not being released at this time, said Kimberly Edds, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
Police recovered two knives and two box cutters at the scene of the shooting, Fyad said.
It is standard procedure for the District Attorney's Office to launch an investigation into shootings involving law enforcement.
