LONG BEACH (CNS) - Long Beach police today sought public help to find a hit-and-motorist responsible for fatally injuring a woman who was crossing a street in a crosswalk.

Officers sent to Atlantic Avenue and Market Street about 8 p.m. Tuesday found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

Authorities withheld her name, pending notification of her relatives.

“The preliminary investigation revealed a sedan traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Atlantic Avenue struck a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk,'' a police statement said. “The driver did not stop and immediately fled the area.''

The car was red, and it sustained “major front-end damage,'' police said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police detectives at 562-570-7355, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
