Breaking this afternoon, Ellen Degeneres fired three of her producers in an emotional and apologetic staff meeting via video-conferencing.
According to the note obtained by Hollywood Reporter,
"I’m so, so sorry for what this has become. I’ve left this to be a well-oiled machine, and I realize it’s not a machine…its human beings."
The note continued, "I apologize for anyone who’s feelings I’ve hurt. I’m not perfect. I’m multi-layered and I learn from my mistakes. I care about each and every one of you. I’m grateful for each and every one of you."
The three senior producers that were fired:
- Executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman
- Co-executive producer Jonathan Norman.
Producers Mary Connelly, Andy Lassner and Derek Westervelt will remain with the show.
INTERNAL INVESTIGATION
Buzzfeed had broke a story in July about allegations of harassment and racism on the set. At that time, the three producers were suspended.
An internal investigation was completed after speaking to approximately 100 staffers and found no "systemic" racism on the show but did acknowledge the need for more diversity and inclusion training.
DeGeneres and those in charge have vowed that everyone on staff — including DeGeneres — will participate in diversity and inclusion workshops.
The show's return has pushed back its 18th season debut by a few days, to Sept. 14.
