Reports from human rights organization claim that China has arrested hundreds of people for speaking publicly about the coronavirus outbreak. One report claimed as many as 500 people have been arrested since January, for incidents ranging from criticizing the government, to simply posting an article about long lines at a funeral home.
On Sunday, authorities arrested a constitutional lawyer for posting an open letter addressed to the National People's Congress (NPC), that criticized how the Chinese government has been handling the pandemic...
"The government’s long-term tight control society and people has almost completely destroyed the organization and self-help capabilities of Chinese society,” Zhang Xuezhong wrote in the letter posted online via WeChat. “The best way to fight for freedom of expression is for everyone to speak as if we already have freedom of speech.”
China is currently among the lowest-ranked countries in the world in terms of freedom of the press, with more than 100 Chinese journalists currently in jail, according to the 2020 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders.
