Broadway Announces Shut Down Will Last Until September, At Least

Just like movie theaters and concerts, Broadway shows have been shut down since mid-March. They were initially set to be shut down through June 7, but the Broadway League has now announced they will remain dark until at least September.

On Tuesday, the Broadway League announced that its 41 theaters would remain closed through at least Sept. 6th.

“While all Broadway shows would love to resume performances as soon as possible, we need to ensure the health and well-being of everyone who comes to the theatre—behind the curtain and in front of it—before shows can return,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League.

Some shows like the new play Hangmen, and the revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? have been specifically affected and will not be returning to Broadway at all following the pandemic shutdown. It's also a major economic blow, as Broadway ticket sales account for more than $1.75 billion per year.

"Today the Broadway League took a difficult but necessary action to put the safety of everyone from the audience to the actors and stage managers first," said Mary McColl, executive director of Actors' Equity Association. "Before our members can safely return to work, we will need new protocols that protect audiences and workers alike."

An official return date for the shows has not yet been announced.
