Man Charged With Killing Common-Law Wife, Wounding Her Father

COMPTON (CNS) - Criminal charges were filed today against a Sherman Oaks man who allegedly gunned down his common-law wife and wounded her father early on New Year's Day in Compton.

Eduardo Ubiarco, 37, pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder and attempted murder.

The charges include sentence-enhancing allegations that he personally used and discharged a handgun.

Ubiarco's common-law wife was shot at 12:38 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of West 154th Street and died at a hospital, and her father survived gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Ubiarco was arrested that day by deputies and has remained in custody since then.

Authorities have not announced a motive for the shooting.

Ubiarco is due back in a Compton courtroom on Jan. 23, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.
