Two Shootings in Athens Leave Two Men Dead, Three Wounded

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Five people were wounded, two fatally, in two shootings tonight within a mile and 15 minutes of one another in the unincorporated Athens area near South Los Angeles.

Three people were wounded in the first shooting, which was reported about 8 p.m. in the 11700 block of Berendo Avenue, near Vermont Avenue and the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A man died and two other people were taken to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County fire and sheriff's departments.

The second shooting, involving two victims, including a man who was killed, was reported about 8:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 105th Street, one block west of Vermont Avenue, sheriff's Deputy Erin Liu said.

A second victim was taken to a hospital, according to the fire department.

It was not immediately clear if the shootings were related or involved gang activity.
