Woman Arrested for Performing Dental Procedures in Home

A Los Angeles woman has been arrested after practicing dentistry without a license and injuring a person in her living room.

City Attorney Mike Feuer says 58-year-old Clara Medina plead no contest to the single count of battery likely to produce serious bodily injury.

“It’s outrageous for someone with no license or formal training to subject a patient to a root canal — a procedure we allege sent a victim to the hospital.”

A news release from the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office says Medina is accused of performing a root canal last March that sent her victim to the hospital.

Feuer says the kind of procedure Medina performed used various needles that can lead to possible permanent nerve damage in the victim's mouth.

“Unlicensed dentists and doctors prey upon people who can’t afford insurance or licensed practitioners, putting their victims in great peril.”

Medina has since been ordered to pay full restitution to her victim and sentenced to three years probation and 30 days of jail or 20 days of community labor.
