France to Set Age of Consent

France is gearing up to decide a legal age for sexual consent...for the first time.

That's right, France has never had an age of consent! So why is this coming up now?

Twice in the past few weeks, French courts refused to prosecute men for rape after having sex with 11-year-olds because the police could not prove coercion.

After public backlash, the government has decided to draft a bill to say that sex with children under a set age will be defined as coercive.

Feminist groups are calling for the age to be set at 15, however Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet says it worth considering the age to be set at 13.

Besides the age of consent, other parts of the upcoming bill will deal with sexual violence and harassment.
