WILDOMAR (CNS) - A fire broke out today deep in the Cleveland National Forest, a few miles southwest of Wildomar, blackening about 100 acres within a couple of hours.
The non-injury blaze was reported about 12:30 p.m. in the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness area, south of the Ortega (74) Highway and Main Divide Road, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
An agency spokeswoman said air tankers and water-dropping helicopters were deployed to attack the flames, which could not be easily reached by ground personnel.
The fire was not in the vicinity of homes or other structures, and it was not posing an immediate threat to the Ortega Highway or surrounding forest roads, according to the USFS.
There was no word on what triggered the blaze.
