(Santa Rosa, CA)  --  Federal immigration authorities are formally suspending all non-criminal immigration enforcement in the Northern California fire zones.  ICE Spokesman James Schwab announced today agents will not be checking or detaining people in evacuation centers, shelters or food banks and will only pick up serious criminals who threaten public safety.

Earlier this week, Sheriff Rob Giordano said he wanted to stamp out a rumor that immigration status checks were underway at shelters.  Congressman Jared Huffman of San Rafael says all residents, regardless of status, should follow evacuation orders and seek shelter without any threat of action by ICE.
