Sad news out of La Verne, the bear that wandered out onto the Foothill freeway and was struck by a vehicle had to be euthanized because of her injuries according to authorities.
La Verne police spotted the 250-pound bear making her way along Bowdoin Street around 7:40 this morning. Police watched as the bear made her way onto the Foothill (210) Freeway in which she was struck and injured by a vehicle traveling eastbound, just went of the Fruit Street exit. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured.
The female bear, weighing about 225 pounds, was injured but still alive, and managed to keep moving and get away from authorities.
California Highway Patrol closed the Fruit Street exit and triggered a Sigalert, and advised residents in the area to stay inside as a precaution.
Personnel from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife managed to use a tranquilizer gun on the bear, to sedate it. Once the drugs took effect, wildlife officials transported her to the Inland Valley Humane Society in Pomona.
Authorities determined that the bear was suffering and had several broken bones. Because of the extent of the bear's injuries, the animal was euthanized.
