1 dead, 7 wounded after shooting at apartment complex in San Diego

A man who opened fire at a pool area of an apartment complex in the University City area of San Diego was shot dead by police after he killed one woman and wounded seven more, several of whom were critical according to authorities. The swimming pool complex was hosting a birthday party with several adults in attendance.

The shooter, described as a "white man wearing brown shorts," was reportedly drinking a beer while shooting, and even took time out to reload his gun according to San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman.

The shooting occurred just after 6pm at the La Jolla Crossroads, a luxury apartment complex in University City near UCSD.

The San Diego Police Department shot and killed the man after he allegedly pointed his gun at police. The gunman, who was identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several of the victims have been hospitalized in critical condition according to Zimmerman.

A motive for the shooting is unknown at the time. Selis and at least one of the victims lived at the apartment complex according to a report from the Los Angeles Times, however police are unsure whether Selis knew any of his victims.
